Our Story

Coach Bob Gilmartin
Bob Gilmartin was more than a coach — he was a mentor, leader, and a constant source of strength for generations of Columbia University football players. Known for his relentless work ethic and trademark toughness, Coach Gilmartin lived by a philosophy that continues to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing him: “Hard to Kill.”
A Columbia Legacy
At Columbia, Coach Gilmartin wasn’t just on the field to run drills — he was there to build men of character. His approach to coaching went far beyond football. He believed in training both the body and the mind, instilling values of discipline, perseverance, and resilience. Practices under his leadership weren’t just about getting stronger or faster; they were about building the grit to face whatever challenges life would throw at you.
Coach Gilmartin’s players remember him not only for his intensity, but for his care. He demanded the best from you, but he also gave the best of himself. Whether it was a word of encouragement, a life lesson tucked into a halftime speech, or simply leading by example, his influence stretched well beyond the locker room.
His Philosophy
Coach Gilmartin often reminded his players of three guiding principles:
“Train your body and mind, and never quit just because things get difficult.”
“In life, no matter what it is you do, leave the place better than you found it.”
“No blame, no anger. It is what it is — so what do we do next? Let’s go!”
These weren’t just words; they were the way he lived his life. They shaped his coaching, his fight against cancer, and his legacy.
Facing Cancer With Strength
When Coach Gilmartin was diagnosed with cancer, he confronted it with the same resilience he had instilled in his athletes. His fight embodied his “Hard to Kill” mantra — refusing to let anger or bitterness define him, and instead focusing on what could be done next. His perseverance and spirit became a lesson in courage for his family, his players, and the entire Columbia community.
Why WeCancer
The Bob Gilmartin Cancer Foundation was created to carry forward his legacy — a legacy of toughness, compassion, and unyielding resolve. Through WeCancer, we aim to unite families, athletes, and communities in the fight against cancer by funding research, providing patient support, and creating opportunities for awareness and action.
Coach Gilmartin left us with a clear example: live with purpose, lift others up, and never stop fighting. This foundation is our way of honoring him, and ensuring his influence continues to impact lives far beyond the football field.
